Bukurungu trail

  1. Bukurungu trail

The Bukurungu Trail is a wilderness trekking route in Rwenzori Mountains National Park in western Uganda (around Kasese District), known for its remote, wild scenery and adventurous nature experience. Opened in 2018 through a partnership between the Uganda Wildlife Authority and WWF, Bukurungu is a less-traveled mountain trekking trail offering an authentic and rugged wilderness experience through the Rwenzori Mountains.

The trek usually starts at the Kasanzi Park Gate in Omukorukumi and ends at Mihunga Park Gate near Nyakalengijo. During the hike, cross through forests, river valleys, heather moorlands, alpine meadows and high-altitude landscapes. While trailing, expect to see glacial lakes like Lake Bukurungu, Lake Mughuli, Lake Bujuku and Lake Irene.

Note: The final climb to Margherita Peak requires technical mountaineering skills, including the use of ropes and crampons.
